International Youth Debate Forum in Prague

In July 2023, the International Debate Youth Forum was held in Prague by the International Debate Education Association (IDEA).

The Georgian delegation selected within the framework of the “Debates for Better Education” project took part in the forum with full funding. Along with Georgia, 200 students from different countries of the world were involved, such as Japan, Finland, Austria, Estonia, Israel, Italy, Spain, the Czech Republic, Ukraine, Latvia, and others.

Within the framework of the forum, students of the Georgian delegation successfully and actively participated in various training workshops. In addition, the specially invited international debate trainer, Keto Magradze, successfully conducted a workshop at the forum, where the students’ high motivation, involvement, and positive evaluations were seen.

An international tournament was successfully held within the framework of the forum. The final round of the tournament was held in the Prague City Hall, where all participants of the tournament were specially invited. It is worth noting the special achievements of the Georgian delegation at the tournament, including the victory of the Georgians in the debate against the Israeli and Spanish teams. The tournament was actively refereed by international debate trainer and judge, Keto Magradze.

In addition, within the framework of the international debate forum, we introduced foreign partner organizations and students with Georgian cuisine, for which we received special evaluations from representatives of various Asian and European countries.

National debate tournament and award ceremony of participants of the project “Debates for Better Education”

Within the framework of the project “Debates for Better Education”, the qualifying rounds of the national debate tournament were successfully held at Tbilisi Green School.

Givi Mikanadze, Chairman of the Education and Science Committee of the Parliament of Georgia, attended the opening of the tournament and addressed the participants.

Teams selected from 700 pupils of debate subjects, clubs, and schools across Georgia took part in the national tournament.

After the qualifying rounds, the final stage of the tournament was held.

First international public debate in Georgia – the visit of a representative of the Latvian debate organization

Within the framework of the “Debates for Better Education” project, which is supported by the Gudavadze-Patarishvili Foundation, the first international public debates were held at Guivy Zaldastanishvili American Academy and N4 public school in Sagarejo.

The school’s debate club, debate school, and Green school pupils participated in American Academy Public Debate, including the pupils that were chosen to participate in the international debate tournament in Prague in July, with full funding.

Pupils of debate clubs of schools of Sagarejo municipality and members of debate schools participated in the public debate of Sagarejo. The public debate was attended by heads of debate clubs of Sagarejo municipality schools, together with directors of the resource center, and schools. The event was held with the support of Sagarejo Municipality City Hall.

In addition, during the visit, a special meeting was held at Ilia State University with students of the Faculty of Business, Technology, and Education, who are taking debates as a training course. The dean of the faculty also participated in the meeting.

Closing Ceremony of the UNICEF Georgia’s Supported Project

The closing ceremony of the project “Schools as a Social Model for Improved Access of All School Children and Young People to Inclusive and Quality Education” and awarding of project participants was held.

The project, which has already made significant changes in the development of young people and contributed to the formation of their thinking, was implemented by the Georgian Institute for Debate and Education, with the support of UNICEF Georgia and the Norwegian government, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia, and at the initiative of the Parliament of Georgia.

The goal of the project is to provide access to non-formal education, which contributes to the academic performance of children. In addition, it ensures increased participation of schoolchildren and young people in inclusive and quality education.

The sustainable goal of the project is to continue and develop the work of debate clubs in 20 public schools of Gurjaani, Dedoplistskaro, Sagarejo, and Sighnaghi municipalities, which are led by local school teachers, in accordance with the experience and training received from GIDE.

UNICEF Project Presentation and Individual Interviews at Khornabuji and Dedoplistskaro N2 Public Schools

Within the framework of the project “Schools as a Social Model for Improved Access of All School Children and Young People to Inclusive and Quality Education”, presentations and individual interviews were held with pupils at Khornabuji and Dedoplistskaro N2 public schools. We are glad to see Georgia at Khornabuji Public School, which combines diversity with such a motivated teacher.

Visiting Zemo Machkhani Public School regarding the UNICEF project

We have already started face-to-face meetings and presentations of our project “Schools as a Social Model for Improved Access of All School Children and Young People to Inclusive and Quality Education” in all selected schools of the Kakheti region, which successfully passed our selection competition. We are very glad that we had our first visit to such a hospitable and motivated Zemo Machkhani Public School.
